IUSY at World Social Forum in Dakar PDF E-mail

"Another world is possible", is the theme for the World Social Forum. "A world of opportunities – together it is possible", was the theme for the IUSY World Congress in Stockholm 2010. The similarities in theme show the linkage between us a socialist movement and the political – but not party political – social movements in the world.

We all want to see another world. Most of the organizations attending the world social forum focus on one field or one issue. They are experts on what they do and really engaged people. We as members or political parties could and should have a closer cooperation and exchange. We have a lot to learn and in many cases it is us politicians they want to effect. And we need their help in forming opinions. We often fight the same battles but we are less coordinated than our opponents. Conservatives, liberals have joined forces with the greedy parts of the economical system and if we want another world – well then we have to start to work together. Change will not come by itself. Therefore it was important for IUSY to be present at the World Social Forum in Dakar.

For IUSY it was also a possibility to meet with our comrades from the region, and especially from Senegal. IUSY have the last year focused on democracy and social justice in seminars/trainings in Africa. We have been in Johannesburg and Accra. Next week we will be in Dar Es Salam . The response we got from the comrades is that IUSY needs to continue to focus on Africa. In many countries people is still refused their rights to live free and secure in a democracy. Social justice and education is needed to lift people out of poverty. This was the message that IUSY put forward actively contributing during seminars and discussion on the situation in Africa. At the same time we strongly stressed that we know what needs to be done, and what solutions that would work. But we don't struggle hard or effectively enough for them and that's why people don't vote for us. Socialism and Social Democracy should regain its self-confidence and focus more on people and less on looking at itself– by focusing on our aims we will also deal with our ways. It is time for the youth to take the lead in the discussion about our values, about the political solutions that is needed and how to regain trust for social democracy around the world.

IUSY also took part of the Global Progressive Forum program  – as on of the partners in the Global Progressive Youth Forum.

IUSY was represented by its Secretary General Johan Hassel, Guillaume Renaud Social Movements Coordinator and Judicael Binaou African Coordinator. The president of MJS France Laurianne Deniaud also took part of the World Social Forum and IUSY and MJS did joint meetings with our comrades from Africa.
