| With the dramatically evolving events in Tunesia over the last week, political change lies in the air. However, democracy is far from being accomplished! After authoritarian president Ben Ali fled his country and officially resigned on Saturday the situation in Tunesia is far from stable and the old political guard is still holding key positions, such as that of interim president. To bring about real political change and establish the foundation for a democratic system the persistence of the Tunesian people as well as continuous international solidarity for their struggle is key now!
To not let the momentum slip away it is important that the international community keeps up the pressure on the old political guard of the authoritarian regime. We can help the people in Tunesia by not turning away our eyes from the evolving events in their country and by keeping up the pressure on our governments to not trade in real democratic change for short-term 'stability' in the region. Continuing public pressure will be especially important with the intense media coverage of today foreseeably slowing down in the coming weeks. DO NOT LET THE PEOPLE OF TUNESIA STAND ALONE!
